Pattern Sizing Charts

Candle on the Hillâ„¢ patterns, as well as many of the other patterns we carry, offer the special benefit of receiving all sizes of a pattern for just one price! This way, for example, if you need a larger size for your hips and a smaller size for your bust, you can cut out your pattern tapering to the size that you need at the place you need it! There can be a bit of variation in sizing for sewing patterns, and patterns will fit everyone differently. Because it is not possible for patternmakers to custom-fit basic patterns to each individual, standard sizing is used much like it is for store-bought clothing. Below are the approximate measurements the patterns are designed to fit. Use a measuring tape to measure snuggly, but not too tight, over your regular underclothing.

If you prefer a very loose fit, you may wish to use a larger size. We realize that many ladies do not fit perfectly into one size category, so just choose the size that most closely fits your measurements. Many ladies choose their size by their bust measurement, and then adjust the rest for a better fit. Even those that do fit the suggested sizing may find that due to body or posture differences, they still may desire to adjust their sewing pattern. We highly recommend the book, Fitting Finesse, by Nancy Luedtke Zieman, to easily modify patterns for a nice fit. When you first receive your pattern, we strongly suggest that you initially make a quick sew using an inexpensive fabric, such as muslin, to be sure you like the fit and style before using your better dress fabric. We also offer pattern tracing material so that you can trace-off your desired size from the original pattern and thus keep the original pattern clean and intact for later use. This is also available in the "Homemaking & Crafting Books" section. (You could also use non-fusible interfacing, tissue paper, or the back side of wrapping paper.)
